2026-02-06 How to Read Your USCIS Case Status

After filing any petition or application with USCIS, you'll receive a receipt notice containing a case number. This number is your key to tracking progress through the USCIS online portal — but the status messages can be cryptic. Here's how to interpret what you see.

Finding Your Receipt Number

Your receipt number appears on Form I-797 (Notice of Action). It consists of three letters followed by ten digits — for example, EAC2390000001.

The first three letters indicate the service center:
- EAC — Eastern Adjudications Center (Vermont)
- WAC — Western Adjudications Center (California)
- LIN — Nebraska Service Center
- SRC — Texas Service Center
- MSC — National Benefits Center
